Professor of Operations Management · University of Cincinnati
I study how organizations design, deliver, and improve services with a focus on healthcare operations, technology’s role in shaping service experiences, and ethical operations. My research appears in Production and Operations
Management, Journal of Operations Management, Milbank Quarterly, and other leading journals.
I have a faculty appointment in the UC Department of Emergency Medicine. I also serve as an Associate/Senior Editor for Production and Operations Management, the Journal of Operations Management, and Health Care Management Science. In 2008, I co-founded the POMS College of Healthcare Operations Management.
As the Ohio Eminent Teaching Fellow at the UC Lindner College of Business, I teach Service Operations and Operations Strategy courses as well as doctoral seminars and new technology-related courses as needed. I also develop teaching games, such as EMERGENCY!, which is used in business schools and medical institutions across North America.
Research Focus
Improving efficiency, quality, and equity in care delivery; from patient flow to operational decision-making and personnel management in emergency departments and other complex health systems.
How firms design and manage service processes, develop new services, deploy new technologies, and manage waiting to improve both operational performance and customer experiences.
How ethical issues, such as fairness and justice, affect operational decision-making, how ethics can be embedded in decision-guiding algorithms, and why organizations may be perceived as ethical or not.
